About Vilnius City
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. Vilnius - most laidback of the Baltic capitals, has managed to retain its easygoing provincial charm despite the astounding economic growth of the last decade. Lithuania has rebounded confidently from 1,000% inflation in 1991 to the dynamic 6% GDP of the last few years. It’s now the fastest-paced economy in the EU and it shows. A fresh set of shiny skyscrapers marks out the new business district. All the hotels are newly built or freshly renovated and all the restaurants are under professional management. Vilnius’ huge, UNESCO-protected Old Town has been patched up, its amazing baroque and gothic architecture restored. There’s a buzz on the streets in the evenings when the sleepy charm of the narrow cobblestone streets is brushed aside and the bars and clubs come alive with stylish, beautiful young people. Vilnius has a well-deserved reputation as one of the safest and friendliest cities in Europe.
French experts pinpointed a spot 20 kilometres north of Vilnius as being the geographical centre of Europe. The Lithuanians have since brought in world-famous sculptors to create mammoth-sized artworks in the grounds of Europe Park, easily reached by car. The actual centre of Europe is just up the road, marked by a star-crowned column.
